In 1862 Sydney's first zoo was opened within the Sydney Royal Botanic Garden and remained there until 1883, when most of it was transferred to Moore Park. By 1908 Moore Park Zoo had become too small and on April 24th, 1912 the NSW Government granted 21 hectares of land which were part of Ashton Park.

Taronga Zoo was officially opened on October 7th, 1916.

After 1967 the accent was put on research and education. Today, many companies have become sponsors of Taronga Zoo helping financing research projects and different sections from Taronga Zoo.

Taronga Zoo it is worth visiting especially considering that Australia has a unique fauna and many of the displays can not be viewed in other parts of the world.

Trivia: Taronga is an Aboriginal word meaning beautiful view.
