  • 1810 Governor Macquarie orders the construction of a market place.
  • 1820 Greenway's Market House is build. The new market sells agricultural products and groceries.
  • 1828 Greenway's Market House is converted to Central Police Court.

  • 1887 George Mc Rae is appointed as city architect and he presents the design of a new market, in a Romanesque style.
  • 1898 July 21, Queen Victoria Building is opened by Mayor Alderman Mathew Harris.
  • 1934-1938 The Queen Victoria Building is remodeled in the Art Deco style featured in the area occupied by the Sydney County Council.
  • 1983 Sydney Council grants a 99-year lease to Ipoh Ltd in exchange for the restoration of the Queen Victoria Building.
  • 1986 November, Queen Victoria Building reopens its doors to the public.
  • 1987 A number of Turrets are restored to original position around the minor domes.
  • 2000 After 66 years, Queen Victoria Building basement re opens.

I do not want to recommend you visiting the Queen Victoria Building for shopping, but I think is good to visit all the levels of the building and admire the construction and some displayes like Queen Victoria, a nicely crafted Chinese bridal cart, a huge clock suspended from the ceiling, paintings, etc.

How to get there
The easiest way is to catch a train to Town Hall station which has one end situated just under QVB. There are also lots of buses stopping around QVB. Alternatively you can use the monorail. See map.
