Royal Randwick Racecourse

brief history ...

Called also the 'Sport of Kings', horse racing has a long tradition in Sydney, and for that matter Australia. First horse race took place in Hyde Park on October 1810.

On 28 January 1833, His Excellency Major-General Sir Richard Bourke, the Governor, decides to reserve a piece of land on the Botany Road for a new racecourse. That piece of land was what we call today Royal Randwick Racecourse. First race was held in June, 1833. Regular racing took place at Randwick for the next five years and then the race ground was used only for training.

The racing at Randwick resumed in May 1860, with a grandstand seating 700 and an attendance of 6,000 people.

In 1977 the Royal Randwick Racecourse is modernized with computerized betting system which lead to a huge increase in revenue.

Queen Elizabeth visited Randwick on 22 February 1992 and opened the new $30 million Paddock Grandstand.
