"Bondi" or "Boondi" is aboriginal word meaning "water breaking over rocks" or "noise of water breaking over rocks."
In 1877 Francis O'Brien established the Bondi beach and the area surrounding the beach as public picnic ground and pleasure resort. The land however was private property. It was not until June 1882 that the Government declared Bondi Beach public.
In 1855 buses begun to run between Bondi Beach and Sydney. In 1870 the NSW
Parliament voted the introduction of the Tramway Bill. In 1902 Bondi Junction Station was created. Three years later, in 1905, an electric tram service between Bondi Junction and Sydney was created. Today only buses
are operating between Bondi Junction and Bondi Beach.
Trivia: Bondi Beach is the closest beach to Sydney CBD
(approx 8 km
). Bondi Beach has the oldest life saving club from Australia
